New NRG, Inc., is focused on the production of Biodiesel. The company is currently in the process of establishing a 100 million gallon per year biodiesel refinery in Burbank, Washington.
Biodiesel is an alternative fuel for diesel engines that is gaining attention in the United States after reaching a considerable level of success in Europe. Biodiesel has the following advantages over conventional diesel fuel:
- Biodiesel is one of the most renewable fuels currently available.
- Biodiesel is non-toxic.
- Biodiesel is biodegradable.
- Biodiesel is an important lubricant for Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel.
Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) describes a new EPA standard for the sulfur content in on-road diesel fuel sold in the United States, beginning June 1st, 2006. Sulfur acts as a lubricant in diesel engines, and Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel requires additives such as biodiesel in order to properly lubricate a diesel engine so it will function properly.
President George W. Bush speaking at a Biodiesel Plant opening in Virginia called biodiesel "one of our nation's most promising alternative fuel sources" and discussed the importance of a comprehensive energy plan to wean the United States from foreign petroleum. The President signaled the nations long term interest in developing alternative fuels with the signing of the 2005 energy bill.
